It's a pleasure to say that we have created the Fan Banner Meccano for IntelliJ IDEA and ReSharper. Now you can create your very own custom banner to show your attitude toward these products. Just pick a phrase that best describes the way you love our software, select the feature you find most fascinating – and you got the banner code to put on a web site or blog....

As you might already know, in our second issue of the newsletter we posted an article  Driving IntelliJ adoption by Killer Plugins  by Paul Jones.  Paul now actually released his plugin into the plugin repository available here.

This is very bad marketing for me.

Please provide business services, and forget about jargon, fashion, attitude, juvenile excitement, ecosystems, agile evanlegism...and all the rest of the crap which is currently afflicting our business, and making projects fail all over the US and Canada.

    Thank you.

Thanks for your comment, the reason we started this program was, because we could see that there are a lot of people who recommend our product. Through this program, we would like to recognize this effort and also to create a platform where ideas can be exchanged

What business services do you think they don't currently provide?

I'm not sure why you think having a place where IDEA fans can help each other articulate the benefits of the product to others is going to make projects fail. I know IDEA has made a measurable improvement to projects I've used it on and spreading that message is going to help businesses not hurt them. Hurt is watching someone spend 2 days trying to fix his eclipse setup then giving in and reinstaling it from scratch!

I'm honestly shocked that you feel so strongly against this campaign. I think it is a good idea, and frankly, I'm happy to be part of a community that loves their IDE. There are so many people that are stuck using terrible software every day, you should feel so lucky to have a license for a piece of fantastic software.

Looks like another unentiligible campaign. Why should I care ? Make simple rules so "evangelists" know what they get for their effort.  Communicate intensively about usefull features and advantages Idea has over competitors.  But first of all stop annoying the people already supporting you by buying your products.

This page/platform was created exactly for the reason to answer your question and comment.  Through exchange of the ideas we will make the rules concrete.  Are you IDEA or ReSharper user?

I bought Jetbrains Resharper as version 1 and just loved it.  I upgraded to version 2 and then version 3.  Problems started with Version 2, and then version 3 brought great slowdowns and many errors; I was constantly unloading and reloading Resharper to get past that, and the productivity aid brought by Resharper declined greatly.  I stopped using it altogether quite a while ago.  I have tried version 4 to see if the upgrade was worthwhile.  Immediately on 3 different machines (each modern machines with 4gb or more ram) development came to a crawl waiting for jetbrains to catch up to my typing in VS2005 and VS2008.  No upgrade, and an extremely disappointed user who feels he basically wasted his money on version 3.

Now they send me emails to join an 'evangelist program"?

Time and time again I have discussed this with the support team and in the support forums.  All you have to do is take a look at the support forums for Resharper to see this has been an ongoing issue for a long time.

While I am a bit of an JetBrains/IntelliJ/IDEA evangelist and love the IDE generally, I have a couple of niggling issues. I wish they would figure out what the name of the product is and hopefully it is something that does not require further explanation. The whole IDEA thing is just to ambiguous and if it's supposed to be "IDE" + "A"... it only works when it's written down, verbally, it fails completely. Secondly, a value comparison against Eclipse would be useful since I find myself so often trying to make the justification to the guys drinking the 'free' Kool-Aide. Sadly, much of the benefits come in subtle ways over time as you use the product and I don't have the time to come up with a comprehensive and cogent arguement. There should be a link that I can just give someone verbally and be done with it.

A comparison with Eclipse is very much missing; sure the transition guides from Eclipse are there but it isn't enough. I completely agree that many benefits come in subtle ways over time but there are some major differences that are important (especially in code navigation/traversal, inspection, analysis, IDE management etc).

I've been contracting across a number of organisations in the last few years and one thing is constant, IDEA is losing out to Eclipse. I've seen teams that used to be exclusively IDEA now exclusively Eclipse. These transitions originate from both developers choosing to use Eclipse and organisations mandating its use (much to the despair of seasoned IDEA users).

In the later case it is especially difficult to justify tangible cost benefits supporting IDEA, not because the reasons aren't there and not that it is impossible to do. In the end it is more that supporting evidence is pretty much non existent; these discussions end up being matters of personal preference and this isn't enough to justify the cost. You also have situations where developers and management aren't even aware of the differences and you end up in a battle of free glorified text editor vs expensive glorified text editor.

There are plenty of cogent arguments to be made in favour of IDEA. Unfortunately many of them can seem like minor nuances compared to Eclipse and often slip under the radar during comparisons. Collectively though they make a large difference.

Bradley,  we will be putting together such document as I am often ask for such information.  There are some documents scattered at various places, but I completely agree with you.  I will post a separate News Item for this topic, and it would be great if you could post under that news item some of your thoughts on what exactly should be in the document.

maybe you guys could split up your resharper package installation options as a lot of people including myself have found problems with the performance. If you broke out the options into how heavy they tax the machine this could be really useful so you could chose to install the options that your machine could handle and at least get some benefit from the resharper package.

I joined the seeder program because I just recently switched over to IDEA from Eclipse for my own personal projects.  I love Eclipse, but I think there is certainly a place for IDEA in the market.  For me the cost is a no-brainer, even though I am a newbie and still learning the features.  It would be a real shame if there was no competition in the IDE market, and right now IDEA is it.

Specifically, the Groovy/Grails support is a move in the right direction.  Eclipse is horrible for this, as it is for lots of "non-core" functions.  WAY too much time is spent configuring Eclipse by most teams, in my opinion.  I am looking forward to seeing the Groovy/Grails support mature (hopefully in IDEA 8?).

Another defining feature is that the couple of IDEA bugs that I reported were fixed almost right away.  I thought I was just doing the right thing for the community by reporting them so that they could get fixed "someday".  I was completely gobsmacked when I got a note from the JIRA site a couple of days later saying the bug was fixed.  That just doesn't happen in Eclipse land, especially when you are using something a bit on the obscure side.

Keep up the good work.  IDEA has my referral and recommendation.

resharper is a total dog on large projects.

On tiny projects I don't need it.

Therefore, I stopped using it long ago.

I am very interested in seeing productivity comparisons between eclipse and idea. My development group switched from idea to eclipse about two years ago. One developer claimed that his productivity took a 50% hit after the switch. Another developer claimed a 35% hit. I maintain that my own productivity took a 25-30% hit. All of us are experienced developers who have used dozens of IDE's during our careers, so we're used to learning curves and changes.  But our productivity estimations are subjective, and therefore seem to carry no weight with management. Does anyone know of any objective studies that compare productivity in eclipse and idea?     Have there been any ergonomic studies that would indicate the number of keystrokes and mouse clicks required to accomplish the same task in eclipse and idea? I've seen three team members with repetitive stress injuries since the IDE switch, and I wonder if this is coincidence, or heightened awareness because I'm one of those with RSI, or if there is a documentable ergonomic advantage to Idea?
